FWD: FWD: FWD: FWD: From a fellow FWD:er

Update: Humbled once again. Dan informed me it is not FWD: but actually just FW: In my defense though, my spell check isn't bothering the FWD: but currently my FW:s have red lines under them (so does my isn't but that isn't here or there :).

I get a lot of forwards during my day. Some are just hilarious and some are well...not. I love the animal ones and the ones that inform me of important things.... well when they are true.

I recently read a Dear Prudence that posed the question of forward etiquette and whether its okay to tell someone to stop sending forwards. I like a lot of them that I get (well unless they are the chain mail sort, then not so much) so I'm good with receiving them. Prudence explained that in the decision to say stop or not, you can simply delete the message, it only takes a second so get over it. I thought that made sense. As far as forward etiquette, she explained at least remove the FWD: and past recipient e-mail addresses in the e-mail. It shows consideration for the one you send it too.

John, a friend from years ago automatically would send an e-mail to anyone sending him a forward to cease and desist (I was unfortunately the recipient of one of these e-mails). His reasons made sense so I respected it. Many people can take all the addresses in the To: bar as well as all the addresses in the e-mail and sell them (I don't actually know if you can still do that but at the time he said you could, so I believed him). John recommended you send the e-mail to yourself and then blind carbon copy everyone else so the recipients never see who else gets it. A good friend of mine, Kathy does that and I think its a great idea. Also he pointed out, God blessed him before he got the chain mail and will continue to bless him after so sending the e-mail to ten people in the next ten minutes won't make a difference. Good point. And I might add how special am I if you sent the exact same message to fifty of your other "closest" friends. I'm sorry I'm complaining...

Another great source for vetting whether a FWD: is true or not is the website, http://urbanlegends.about.com/ Not only is this website helpful in sifting through e-mail "urban lengends" and truth, but when you have nothing else to do, it is extremely entertaining. I particularely love the pictures they prove to be false. Hours and hours of mindless fun though I admit I don't have that option anymore. For those of you who still do have hours and hours or even an hour of time to devote to mindless fun...don't take it for granted and treasure it. Seriously. I admit though, my cooler than cooler niece, Ashlyn sent me a forward today that I went to the website to check out and almost got lost in their endless myth debusters. Her FWD: was true by the way.

Lastly and then I will put the soap box back in the attic. Take the time to get to know whether the person you are sending the FWD: to really wants it. I love anything animals so when I get pictures and videos of funny or cute animals I love it but my mom couldn't care less about them. Just an example (slipping in at the end shamelessly (though I feel some shame creeping in) I'm not so much a fan of anything that insists I need to send it on as well i.e. chain mail.) Okay I'm done. Don't hate me. I sent FWD:s as well so from one FWD:er to another. :)

Haha! This title cracks me up! That is one of my biggest pet peeves about forwards! haha! At least delete all but the first "FWD," if you must leave that one.

I'm in agreement with you on just to delete the ones you don't want. It's better to do that than risk hurting someone's feelings when they are completely harmless...and so are the forwards they send out. I've battled with this one...but I think it just works out better.

My BIGGEST pet peeve with this is receiving one that says if I don't send it to ten or so people....then I don't love God. I especially can't stand this when it comes from someone who never mentions God...except to send out those type e-mails. (Sigh) Thanks for the soap box for the day! HEHEHEHE!
